Proofreading and Editing Services

My name is Sharlene Holley. I have a Master of Science degree and a PGCE (Postgraduate Certificate in Education) along with a Bachelor of Nursing. I am a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. I have many years’ experience teaching and assessing at University level in both classroom and online distance learning environments.

I can proofread and edit your novels, books, academic assignments and business documents and provide advice and support on how to bring them to publishable or submission standard.

Proofreading

Proofreading enhances the flow and readability of the work, as well as its presentation and appearance. It addresses issues such as spelling, punctuation, typographical and grammatical errors. Proofreading can occur at any stage of the work but is a must for the final copy.

Editing

Editing is a more detailed process, which reviews the work as a whole. It involves checking for plot, character and timeframe inconsistencies as well as context and dialogue. Language, phrasing, repetition and structural issues are also addressed. Editing may need to be done several times, as one change may affect other aspects of the work. It needs to be done in conjunction with proofreading, as they both impact on overall quality.

Editing and proofreading take time and attention to detail. Writers can sometimes find it hard to do this accurately due to their close relationship with the work. While friends and family can offer support and encouragement, an independent, impartial source of support and guidance can be invaluable. This is where The Red Quill can assist you in achieving the best outcome, helping to avoid any distracting feedback reviews or costly post-publication rewrites and revisions. Input will be critique, not criticism. It will be done with professionalism and sensitivity. Confidentiality is assured.

Writers can enhance their work by paying close attention to their writing style. Writing that is concise and focused will be much more attractive to the reader. When using descriptive words such as adjectives and adverbs a single word, le mot juste, is more effective than multiple mediocre choices. When choosing content, remove anything that doesn’t serve the plot. As Anton Chekhov (Russian playwright) so rightly states ‘If there is a rifle hanging on the wall in Act 1, it must be fired in the next Act. Otherwise it has no business being there.’ Equally, when devising a plot or a character, ensure that each develops and concludes within the reader’s reasonable expectations. Otherwise, the plot or character loses authenticity and the reader will disengage. So, no last- minute superpowers!

Writers can also help themselves by proofreading and editing as the work is created. Printing off a copy of the work highlights grammar, spelling and other errors which may not be as clear from reading on a screen.

Authors

Having completed your manuscript, you will be excited and anxious to publish. However, as most professional authors know, getting to that publishable stage requires a great deal of ‘behind the scenes’ work and support. This ‘behind the scenes’ work can be the difference between success and failure. Editing and proofreading are a large part of that support. The many hours spent researching and working on your manuscript can make you so familiar with your work that you may not even recognize mistakes or the areas that need improvement or just fine-tuning. To be confident about submitting your manuscript to a journal, a publishing house or even a literary agency you need to ensure that each sentence has correct spelling, is well punctuated and has the best possible word choice and sentence structure.

Some writers find it helpful to proofread and edit as the work is created. Others find this distracting as they are more focused on getting their ideas on paper. Printing off a copy of the work can highlight grammar, spelling and other errors which may not be as clear from reading on a screen. However, none of these approaches eliminates the need for professional oversight and input. read more
